FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS) Needs Improvement.

Reports of Potential Drug Side Effects by Physicians, Pharmacists, Patients, and Manufacturers.

The Adverse Event Reporting System, or AERS, is the FDA's system to monitor potential side effects of a prescription drug after it has been approved for use by patients in the U.S. This system is often referred to as the MedWatch program. Experts have estimated that as few as ten percent of possible drug reactions are reported to the FDA through AERS, or MedWatch. Under the current system, the FDA relies upon voluntary reports of possible drug adverse reactions from physicians, pharmacists and patients; drug companies are required to inform the FDA about reports of adverse events involving use of their prescription medications.

Mr. Aulakh has proven expertise at running a global technology enterprise. Until June 2005, he was the President and CEO of Quark Inc., a Denver, Colorado, based company specializing in desktop, enterprise, and Internet software for the publishing industry. During his tenure, Quark attained double digit revenue growth while maintaining extremely healthy operating margins. As Vice President, Research and Development, Mr. Aulakh grew Quark R&D into a truly multinational organization. He oversaw the establishment of development centers in the United States, Germany, Singapore, and India. In earlier years, Mr. Aulakh managed the development of technical products and services for national and multi-national corporations in the Telecommunications, Energy, and Healthcare industries. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Master’s in Industrial Engineering, and an MBA. Mr. Aulakh has traveled worldwide to meet with customers, explore new markets, and evaluate talent.
